Most tortoises of the types commonly kept as pets do hibernate in the wild and can undergo hibernation in captivity. However, only a perfectly fit tortoise should be hibernated in order to avoid problems. Tortoises which are anything less than l00% fit, or are in any way underweight may need to be kept awake and feeding over the entire winter season. During August and September, as the days grow shorter, the light intensity decreases, the temperature begins to fall and tortoises prepare for hibernation. It is strongly recommended that in early September tortoises receive a check over to make sure there are no evident signs of disease and the process of hibernation can be safely started.
Our check over includes a consultation and review of your husbandry plan, clinical examination and weight check. To book an appointment with our specialist exotic vets please call 01225 832521.
